Colorado Ballet Announces New Executive Director

Katrina Tamminga - Aug. 28, 2010

DENVER—Aug. 28, 2010, 9:00 a.m. (M.S.T.)—The Colorado Ballet Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Marie Belew Wheatley as Executive Director of Colorado Ballet. Wheatley will assume her new duties on Sept. 7, 2010.

Wheatley brings 22 years of non-profit experience in the Denver community, having worked with both local and national organizations. Most recently, Wheatley served as President and Chief Executive Officer for the American Humane Association, based in Denver. During her six-year tenure with the American Humane Association, Wheatley was successful in the restructuring and financial turnaround of the organization. She significantly increased the capacity of fund development, resulting in multi-million dollar, record-setting contributions. Wheatley also spent 16 years at the Mile High Chapter of the American Red Cross, serving in various roles including Interim Chief Executive Officer, Chief Development Officer and Director of Financial Development.

Wheatley is being hired after a 10-month restructuring effort at Colorado Ballet, led by the Board of Trustees. She was selected primarily because of her proven successes in fund raising and turnaround efforts and her extensive management experience, all skills the Board of Trustees sought throughout their search.

“Marie’s track record is incomparable as she proves to be a visionary with extensive experience in non-profit management and fundraising,” said Colorado Ballet Board of Trustees Chairman and Acting Executive Director Denise Sanderson. “We are confident in our decision and look forward to working closely with Marie.”

Along with an established executive record, Wheatley also has an affinity for the arts, having served on the boards of the Junior Symphony Guild, Opera Colorado Guild and the Denver Art Museum’s Alliance of Contemporary Art.

“Her executive style along with her deep appreciation for the arts will serve Colorado Ballet in many ways,” said Colorado Ballet Artistic Director Gil Boggs. “She has an unflappable senior executive presence, a calm and wise approach to balancing challenges and the ability to strongly collaborate. I look forward to working with her.”

Boggs, Colorado Ballet staff and the Board of Trustees welcome Wheatley and look forward to working together to continue Colorado Ballet’s mission to present superior quality classical ballet and innovative dance that enhances the cultural life of the Denver community.

“I am excited to be joining the leadership team at Colorado Ballet,” Wheatley said. “I have a high regard for the amazing work they have done in the last six months to stabilize the organization in preparation for its next 50 years.”
