Colorado Ballet presents Ballet MasterWorks, an innovative production of dance and music

Sanya Andersen-Vie - January 14, 2013

DENVER – Colorado Ballet will present the repertory production Ballet MasterWorks February 22 through March 3, 2013 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, with live music performed by the 65 members of the Colorado Ballet Orchestra.  Ballet MasterWorks features The Rite of Spring, Theme and Variations and the world premiere of In Pieces.

“This production showcases the talent, artistry and athleticism of Colorado Ballet’s dancers and will feature the most challenging choreography and music our dancers and musicians could perform,” said Gil Boggs, Colorado Ballet Artistic Director.  “These three works in one evening with a live orchestra performance will make for a very powerful night of dance and music and will leave the audience in awe.”

Ballet MasterWorks opens with George Balanchine’s ballet Theme and Variations, performed to the final movement of Tchaikovsky’s Suite No. 3 for Orchestra in G Major.

“With a cast of 26 dancers, this ballet is one of Balanchine’s masterpieces and the Company is honored that the Balanchine Trust has granted Colorado Ballet the rights to perform this work," said Boggs.  "George Balanchine is widely regarded as the foremost neo-classical choreographer in the world of ballet.  This is the first Balanchine piece performed during my tenure with Colorado Ballet and the first performed by the Company in nearly 10 years.”

Ballet MasterWorks will also showcase the world premiere of a new neo-classical work In Pieces, choreographed by Val Caniparoli to Poul Ruders’ musical composition Concerto in Pieces.  Choreographer for San Francisco Ballet, Caniparoli has contributed to the repertories of more than 35 dance companies.

“This is the first time Val Caniparoli has choreographed a piece for Colorado Ballet,” said Boggs.  “His body of work is rooted in classicism and influenced by all forms of movement.”

Highlighting this program will be a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s composition of The Rite of Spring, set to the choreography of Glen Tetley’s ballet, Le Sacre du Printemps.

“When it premiered in the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris in 1913, the music was so groundbreaking and the choreography so controversial that it nearly evoked a riot on opening night,” said Boggs.  “This production promises to be just as intense.  Its percussive rhythms and dissonant harmonies with the challenging choreography will be a true feast for the senses and will hopefully evoke strong emotions in the audience, without the rioting of course.”
