Intermediate Level

Ballet Level 4

(Ages 10+ by placement) Level 4 students continue to develop extension of the legs and strength of the feet as well as more advanced barre work, center work, port de bras and pre-pointe. Students are assessed for pointe work, and depending on individual progression and development, students may be given the opportunity to begin work en pointe in the second semester. During this progression, students become aware of the long-term goals inherent to classical ballet training. Each child’s natural abilities are fostered, and students are encouraged to pursue their passion for dance.

Young men are offered specialized training tailored to the unique needs of men’s ballet technique. Young men in this level continue to work on the fundamentals of ballet and emphasize clarity in positions, core and back strength, and the foundations for men’s virtuosic technique.

Students in this level are eligible to participate in Colorado Ballet Academy’s Youth America Grand Prix and Denver Ballet Guild programs.

Ballet Level 5

(Ages 11+ by placement) Training intensifies as students mature and gain more knowledge of the classical ballet vocabulary. Classes focus on pointe work, pirouettes, use of the head and upper body, fluidity of port de bras and clarity of Allegro.

Young men are offered specialized training tailored to the unique needs of men’s ballet technique. Young men in this level continue to work on the fundamentals of ballet and emphasize clarity in positions, core and back strength, and the foundations for men’s virtuosic technique.

In addition to Ballet and Pointe, Level 5 curriculum includes Stretch and Condition and Intermediate Character/Modern, in which they will study one semester of Character and one semester of Modern.

Character Dance is the stylized representation of a traditional folk or national dance, mostly from European countries, and uses movements and music which have been adapted for the theater. Examples of Character Dance are found in full length classical ballets such as Swan Lake, Coppelia and Sleeping Beauty. Level 5 Character will strengthen the fundamentals of this style with emphasis on positions and musicality. Students will be introduced to dances such as Czardas and Mazurka.

Level 5 Modern will build on fundamentals of Limon, Horton and Graham techniques as students continue to explore composition and improvisation. All Modern classes culminate with a showcase performance in May.

Students in this level are eligible to participate in Colorado Ballet Academy’s Youth America Grand Prix and Denver Ballet Guild programs.
