Be Beautiful Be Yourself

Based on Boston Ballet’s “Adaptive Dance” program and supported by the Anna and John J. Sie Center for Down Syndrome at Children’s Hospital Colorado and the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, the Be Beautiful Be Yourself Dance program provides 30 weeks of dance classes to 30 students ages 5-16 with Down syndrome.

Teaching artists work closely with Children’s Hospital Colorado's renowned physical therapist and Down Syndrome expert Pat Winders to build kinesthetic and cognitive skills through locomotor movements that incorporate creative movement dance concepts, rhythm, and basic ballet technique. The purpose of the program is to instill a lifelong love of dance and movement in each student. The students work on physical stamina, verbalization skills, following directions, and body awareness through social and emotional learning techniques.

In addition to weekly classes, two BBBY dancers in our Ballet ll class are chosen every year to dance in the company’s production of The Nutcracker. To provide an inclusive experience, these two dancers rehearse their part in the studio with company dancers, have a dress rehearsal on stage, and each perform for one night of The Nutcracker.
