Synopsis

ACT I
While on an adventure driven by the vision of his love, Don Quixote arrives in a small town in Spain with his squire Sancho Panza, when he notices the elegant yet feisty Kitri and wonders if he has found what he has been searching for. Kitri is in love with a barber, Basilio, but much to her dismay, her father has promised her to another, so she runs away with Basilio, followed closely by Don Quioxte and Sancho Panza as well as her father, Lorenzo.

ACT II (three scenes)
Don Quixote and Sancho Panza find Kitri and Basilio at a friendly gypsy camp, where Don Quixote realizes that Kitri belongs with Basilio and is not who he has been searching for. After he awakens from a dream of beautiful maidens and Dryads, in which Kitri symbolizes his love, he attempts to lead Lorenzo astray in his search for Kitri and Basilio.

Lorenzo finds Kitri and Basilio in a tavern. Basilio then draws a knife and seems to stab himself in an attempt to fake his own death in hopes this will implore Lorenzo to honor his “dying” last wish—to unite Kitri and himself, but Lorenzo refuses. He quickly changes his mind when Don Quixote challenges him for not honoring Basilio’s dying wish. Basilio returns to life when his “last wish” is granted.

ACT III
Kitri and Basilio get married, and the village celebrates. Don Quixote congratulates the couple, bids them a warm farewell and resumes his ever-lasting adventures to find his love.
